Rimmel London Magnif'eyes eyeshadow palettes review by Lena Talks Beauty

Rimmel Magnif’Eyes Eyeshadow Palettes came out here in New Zealand during January and I was lucky enough to be sent two of them. I’ve been wearing them pretty regularly over the last month or so and it’s time to share my thoughts. The palettes have eight eyeshadows in them, with a mix of matte and shimmers. Both palettes have a good collection of eyeshadow colours to create a variety of looks from, which make them very versatile. Keep reading to see them swatched and in use, as well as my review of them.

Batiste, Clinique, Simple, Collection, Trilogy, Rimmel, Lush, The Body Shop, Hask, Neutrogena - Lena Talks Beauty

It’s the start of a new month, which means it’s empties time! I completely forgot to write one for June, which means we have a bumper crop of used up products. There are 4 skincare, 3 body products, 6 makeup, and 2 haircare, most of them are even full size. Products are from brands such as Clinique, Batiste, Lush, Bare Minerals, Bourjois and much much more. Keep reading for my reviews on all of these products. Some of these products were sent to me from brands and PR companies, and those have been marked with an asterix – however my opinion is always honest.

5 Favourite Pink Lipsticks

Monday, October 5th 2015 Beauty

Someone asked me the other day what my favourite pink lipsticks are. This was a seriously hard decision for me.I have so many pink lipsticks, it felt like I was trying to choose my favourite child – if I had 20 children. I ended up choosing lipsticks from Bourjois, NYX, MAC, Rimmel, and Karen Murrell. Read on to see which ones they are, and why they’re my favourite.

Swap with Jasmin Charlotte

Wednesday, July 1st 2015 Makeup

I made friends with Jasmin through Twitter, via one of the many chats like #bbloggers or similar – I’m not entirely sure, since it has been a while! She is from England, but mostly grew up in New Zealand so we connected over that. This swap was born when I posted about a new range of Whittaker’s Chocolate, and Jasmin was super keen to try some, and we decided to do a beauty swap as well. I sent her a Chi Chi eyeshadow palette, an Australis lipstick, Ecostore lip balm in addition to the chocolate treats.

This is what I received from Jasmin!

sleek eye and cheek palette all day soiree, makeup revolution iconic 3, sleek brow kit, rimmel 107, bourjois 07 nude ist

Jasmin sent me a Sleek eye and cheek palette, Makeup Revolution eyeshadow palette, Sleek brow kit, Rimmel lipstick, and a Bourjois liquid lipstick! I haven’t had time to use most of these properly yet, but I have my first impressions and observations and I’m sure they’ll feature in full blog posts in the future.

March Empties – Hair, Nails, Lips & Skin

Monday, April 6th 2015 Uncategorised

Another month, another bunch of products used up and ready to be written about! It’s a bit of a mixed bag, with a couple of hair products and nail polishes, as well as a lip gloss and a fake tan. Let’s get cracking!

Rimmel Vinyl Gloss – Keep A Secret
I really liked this lip gloss, and it was a great ‘my lips but better’ shade but unfortunately it expired. I noticed that the smell and texture had changed, and reluctantly tossed it. I searched online to find pricing information for this and it looks like the Rimmel Vinyl Gloss range has been discontinued which is a shame, I have high standard for lip gloss and this met them.

Repurchase? If possible.

Beauty Review March Beauty Box

Tuesday, March 24th 2015 Makeup

My friend Kelsy ordered the Beauty Review March Beauty Box, and I was so interested by her unboxing that she did on twitter, that I asked her to write a guest post about it – Lena.

Beauty Review March Beauty Box

My day today was not amazing. I got to work and was promptly sent home because my back was not behaving like a back should. I spent most of the day in child pose. But I did get up to answer the door for couriers, and one of them brought me the long awaited Beauty Review Beauty Box! I paid $53.95 for a mystery box of 12 full sized products, worth over $236 (including shipping) back in late February. I’ve been waiting patiently (OK – not so patiently) for it to arrive. Beauty Review is a website for New Zealanders to review thousands of different beauty products, as well as get the opportunity to trial products sent out by beauty companies. Fearless Style – makeup edition

Monday, February 23rd 2015 Makeup

A few weeks ago my friend Meagan who blogs over at This Is Meagan Kerr, put a call out for plus size women to be photographed for her body positive fashion project. It’s called Fat Girls Shouldn’t Wear Stripes – Fearless Style, and she wanted women to pick out their favourite outfit, and to step in front of her camera being our fat fabulous selves. In a rush of confidence, I volunteered to do it, and before I knew it I was pretending to be a supermodel for Meagan. I was really nervous – publicly putting my name and face and body out there as a fat woman was a big deal. Nevertheless, one Sunday morning I got up and got ready for it – despite the fact that I was at the peak of my Glandular Fever, not that I knew it yet. In this post, I’m going to show what makeup I chose to represent my fearless style.

Makeup: Celebrity edition

Monday, August 18th 2014 Makeup

Celebrities have been featured in advertising for cosmetics for years, and now they are even launching their own brands or lines. Today I’m going to review a couple of different make up items from brands or lines of products that bear the names of some major celebrities.

Kate Moss has been a face of Rimmel since 2001, and in 2011 she launched a range of Kate Moss for Rimmel lipsticks. Lasting Finish, and Lasting Finish Matte lipsticks have been hugely successful products that are sold around the world. One of my most frequently worn lipsticks is Lasting Finish Matte #107, which I’m wearing in the photo below. It’s a darker red than I would typically wear, somewhat vampy but still office-appropriate which is perfect for me. The matte finish isn’t drying on my lips, and doesn’t look patchy as it begins to wear. It will easily last through lunch time on me, which is impressive as I seem to eat all of my lipstick off quite quickly. It is also a quite affordable product, selling from $14.99 at The Warehouse, Farmers and Kmart stores.

One of my not-well-kept secrets is that I’m a big reality TV fan, especially of the Kardashians. That’s what drew me to the Kardashian Beauty stand in Myer, but once I swatched some of the colours I was really impressed with the quality of them. I bought Kardashian Beauty En-joy stick lip lacquer in the shade Rose Parade. This is a warm red lipstick in a pencil shape, not the traditional ‘bullet’ format most lipsticks come in, which makes outlining my cupid’s bow easy. It has quite a creamy texture, which does mean that the wear time isn’t the greatest but that’s okay with me. It’s not sold anywhere in New Zealand that I know of, but if you find it overseas or online, pick one up! I purchased my one for $15.95 AUD at Kit Cosmetics within Myer in Melbourne.

Even boys are getting in on the action – One Direction has a line with UK brand Makeup Academy which looks suprisingly good – I wouldn’t mind the ‘Rock me Louis’ lipstick! Justin Bieber also had a range of nail polish with Nicole by OPI back in 2011.

MAC is a brand which always has celebrity collaborations – this year alone there have been collections with Sharon and Kelly Osbourne, Lorde, and Rihanna recently announced she will be having another collection of Viva Glam products which of course I have my eye on!

Personally, I would love it if there was a Nicki Minaj brand or line of products – are there any celebrities that you would like to see have a makeup collection? Let me know in the comments section, I’m sure there are some interesting answers.

Instagram roundup

Sunday, August 17th 2014 Nails

Even before I was a blogger, I liked to share my nails and makeup with the world on instagram. I’ve done a bit of a round up of some of my favourite beauty-related pictures from my personal instagram account from back in the day, and I hope you enjoy!

In this picture from September 2012 we have my collection after 6 months of frantic buying, because I was no longer working in a job where I couldn’t paint my nails!
OPI, China Glaze, Orly, Revlon and more.

This is some pretty basic nail art from Valentine’s Day 2013 – Orly White Out over Nicole by OPI’s Kourt is Red-y for a Pedi from their Kardashian Kollection

My attempt at stamping wasn’t  a great success and I haven’t repeated the experiment. Not sure what colour that polish is, I didn’t have it in the caption.

I invested in some french tip stickers and did this. The lighter pink is China Glaze Temptation Carnation and the darker pink is Orly Basket Case.

My long-suffering boyfriend assisted with this, and I was pretty pleased with how it turned out. I only wrote that the pink was China Glaze and I haven’t narrowed it down because I have so many pink CG polishes. September 2013.

My Kmart face!

Monday, August 4th 2014 Makeup

I am in love with Kmart, I find it impossible to not go there when I go to the mall, and every time I do I seem to end up buying something. This happened the other day, when I went in to buy a tshirt and came out with a tshirt, leggings and also some makeup.

Couldn't resist buying some makeup at Kmart today! BYS lip tar, ELF concealer/highligher and an Eyes eyeliner. They'll all be on the blog before long! #BYS #liptar #ELF #EyesLipsFace #makeup #muo #bbloggers

A post shared by Lena (@lenatalks) on

Last week I saw Morgan from Hyacinth Girl post her $20 makeup challenge, using Kmart products, and I was inspired. I wanted to try on all of my new products, and I combined this with a bit of a challenge – do an entire face of makeup using only products that can be bought at Kmart. Some of them I actually bought elsewhere but they can be bought at Kmart, so let’s not be nit picky!

I started with Maybelline Dream Pure BB cream in the shade light, which has pretty decent coverage, and just put it all over my face with my fingers. Next up was one of my new purchases, ELF Studio Under Eye Concealer & Highlighter. I put the concealer, which was in the shade light under my eyes, and blended it with a brush, and then repeated with the highlighter, to brighten the darkness under my eyes. It said that the highlighter can be used as an eyeshadow primer, so I put it on my lids too. It did give a nice lightness to the areas, but wasn’t overwhelmingly shimmery. I set it all with Rimmel Stay Matte powder in transparent, which is my usual powder of choice.

Swatches of the ELF concealer and highlighter compared to my usual concealer

Once my base was done I used my ELF brow kit, in light, to fill in my brows before putting Maybelline Color Tattoo in Bad to the Bronze all over my lids. Then it was eyeliner time – I bought this brown eyeliner pencil from Kmart’s Face Eyes Lips Nails range to keep in my emergency makeup kit at work, so I was pleased it was so cheap. It wasn’t as smooth as I usually like to use, but for $5, and considering I won’t use it too much it’s okay. I didn’t take a photo since it wasn’t that interesting to look at, but it was a nice and subtle look. For mascara I used my favourite Maybelline The Falsies Big Eyes.

Then came the item I was most excited about – BYS Lip Tar 02 Party in Ibiza, which cost about $7 (I threw away the receipt like an idiot). My friend Jay wore one of these once and I was so impressed with its staying power over lunch that I vowed to buy one, and so I did. I love the bright pink colour and it lasted really well through a meal that usually would remove all trace of colour. It was a bit fussy to apply, as it comes with a tiny brush to use, but I think with practice it’d get easier.

BYS Lip Tar 02 Party in Ibiza swatch

So bright!

And here’s how it looked all together!

Kmart makeup face BYS lip tarI think a lot of people write off Kmart and other cheaper stores as having poor quality makeup but a lot of the time there are a lot of great products there – as my beautiful pictures should show you (haha sorry for being obnoxious). Considering how outrageously expensive cosmetics are in NZ, it’s a good idea to not let snobbish-ness about brands mean you overlook some real gems. I use a mixture of cheaper and more expensive brands most days, and I think just because something is cheap doesn’t mean it’s bad, and vice versa – more expensive brands can definitely have some fails.

Are there any Kmart makeup products you can recommend?
I’m always on the lookout for new things to buy on my frequent visits!
