Hello friends! It’s been a while since I’ve blogged, and I’ve missed it so much. The last couple of months have been incredibly busy for me, and blogging has fallen by the wayside. During May, I started a new job and moved house within a couple of days. It has been a big upheaval but things have settled down now, so time for a bit of a catch up!

2016 – what a year! A lot went on, both for me in a personal sense as well as in my blogging capacity. It’s been a wee while since I’ve updated on what’s going on in my life to you all, and I thought with the new year that was a good opportunity to do so.
Making: Plans to move house! My brother and I have been flatting together for 5 years but we are finally going our separate ways,
Cooking: One Sheet Pan Parmesan Crusted Salmon with Roasted Broccoli for dinner tonight. One of my goals for the year was to learn to cook more things.
Drinking: Plunger coffee with almond milk.
Wanting: To buy a new handbag – mine are too big or too small, I need one that’s just right.
Looking: Out my bedroom window, hoping for the weather to improve
Playing: Zayn Malik’s new song on repeat
Deciding: What to wear on a date tonight.
Wishing: That I was at the beach.
I took this photo overlooking Piha Beach a month ago
Enjoying: The beautiful summer weather (not today obviously!)
Waiting: To hear back from one of the flats I looked at this week – I’d love to move in there.
Liking: My new job. I suppose it’s not that new any more, it’s been almost four months but it feels new to me still.
Wondering: Where I’ll be this time next year, what I’ll be doing.
Loving: How supportive my parents are. Really means a lot to me.
Pondering: how I feel about social influencers and sponsored content, have been having some interesting discussions about the ethics of it lately.
Considering: taking some photos for a post about some new lipsticks.
Buying: The last thing (other than food/drink) that I bought was some workout tops from Kmart.
One of my new tops
Watching: Brooklyn 99 has been keeping me company lately
Hoping: that wherever I end up living, the people are nice and the house feels like a home.
Marvelling: At how far this blog has come in almost 2 years. I’m so impressed.
Needing: Some calmness in my life. Hopefully in the next month or so.
Questioning: My life plans. I thought I’d planned it all out at age 18 but life has not gone according to plan. What next?
Smelling: My vanilla perfume (more about it in this post)
Wearing: A black maternity dress from Kmart hahaha. I’m not even pregnant but their maternity clothes are nicer than a lot of their frumpy plus size clothes.
Following: Awkward Bloggers on Instagram. These girls make me laugh so much – very relatable as a blogger
Noticing: That I’m starting to develop muscles. I’ve been doing Les Mills pump classes lately and working so hard.
Knowing: hmmm…it’s hard to say what I know for sure (like the Oprah segment!)
Thinking: About whether or not it’s time to start getting ready to go out.
Admiring: Bloggers who take amazing photos.
Sorting: Through 5 years worth of things in my bedroom.
Getting: Excited for my upcoming trip to Melbourne for the Comedy Festival and to see one of my besties.
Bookmarking: Creative Convex by PinkPot. I don’t like using stock images but sometimes one just comes in handy and these are so beautiful.
Coveting: A coffee machine at home. I’d love one, but I drink most of my coffee at work so can’t really justify the expense. Also, since I was a barista throughout high school and university I’d want a really nice machine that I probably can’t afford.
Disliking: What’s going on politically in NZ. How soon until the next election??
Opening: A sample of Clinique Pep-Start Eye Cream that I got at the mall todaty.
Giggling: More like full on L-M-A-O, listening to Wil Anderson and Charlie Clausen’s podcast TOFOP, as mentioned in Lena Talks Podcasts
Feeling: Excited and nervous. I’m going on a date tonight.
Snacking: on nothing. My brother is at the supermarket though and I put in a request for corn chips.
Helping: Gosh, I’m not sure if I’m helping anyone at all?!
Hearing: Cicadas chirping away outside
While we’re here – do you like my new logo? My friend Elese now has an Etsy store where she does custom hand-painted logos like my one. I think it works so nicely with my new theme. I made my original logo with stock images and free software, and had a default wordpress theme, and I LOVE how much prettier and more professional it looks now.
It was nice to sit down and take stock of my life – I’d love your comments to see how things are with you, dear readers.

I know, it seems to be a bit too early in the year to be reflecting on the year that’s been, but for me, this year really began for me around this time last year. It was late November when I ended a relationship I had been in for six years – my entire adult life! It was a massive decision, but it was totally right for me, and for him. In the year that’s passed, I feel like my life has radically changed in so many good ways. I was reflecting on this last night while having a bath, and wanted to take the chance to get away from the beauty, and be a bit personal with you readers.
Reflecting on the year that was
Beauty blogging can be a very competitive industry – everyone wants to get the latest and greatest products, and have a post about it up – fast. Whilst I am now fortunate to be receiving products from PR companies and brands, I still find myself wanting to buy makeup ‘for the blog’. I’ve always had champagne tastes, and a beer (or Lindauer!) budget. I love to shop, I love to try new products, and sadly my income and other expenses don’t allow me to do as much of it as I would like. I never really compare myself to celebrities because they’re so far from my reality, I can’t compare myself to people whose incomes have many more zeroes than mine. However, I do compare myself to fellow bloggers, friends, and people on Instagram, and I know from talking to other bloggers that they do so too.
I’m going to be totally honest and say that last year/early this year I ended up getting myself into a bit of credit card debt. I was living beyond my means, and wanting to shop, to keep up with the Joneses/the Kardashians/other bloggers. It all came to a head and I realised that I couldn’t continue to keep doing that – I realised I had to live within my means before my finances got really out of control! Being newly single, and with the increased expenses I have as a result, plus having to pay off this debt means I have had to RADICALLY cut back – I haven’t bought ANY makeup or beauty products in months!!!
Two posts in one day?! I know, this is unusual, but I was reading my friend Laura’s blog – Laura Laura Blog. She did a ‘taking stock’ post, and I wanted to do the same.
Making: I’m knitting abeanie for my friend Jordanne’s baby
Cooking: Homemade pizza for dinner
Drinking: Coke Zero
Reading: The Dilemma, by Penny Vincenzi
Wanting: To find out who wins Survivor, and who is on Season 31!
Looking: At the grey weather outside
Playing: Currently I’ve been playing Sam Smith a lot. I went to his concert last month, shortly before he had to end his tour to get surgery on his vocal cords. I’m glad I was able to see him perform because it was incredible.
In response to my reader survey some of you said that you’d like to get to know the person behind the blog. I’ve been writing on here for six months, but most of you probably don’t know a huge amount about me.
My boyfriend and I at my dad’s wedding
I live in Auckland, New Zealand and have done for all of my 23 years. I live with my boyfriend of 6 years, Sam, and my 22 year old brother I work in an office, doing customer service and administration work. It’s not exactly my dream job but it’s okay for now. I studied Geography and then Environmental Management at university, so that’s my background of environmentalism and science that comes on on some posts, like when I wrote about microbeads, or petroleum.
In my teenage years I wasn’t into a lot of makeup, just some sparkly eye makeup and lip gloss mostly. I was always more interested in doing my nails. That didn’t really change much until I went on a trip to the US with my stepsister when I was 21, and she introduced me to the wonderful world of Sephora and MAC and it was glorious. From there the obsession began! I joined the MakeupAddiction subreddit and started watching youtubers doing makeup.
My friend Rebecca and I, at a meet up
I found myself having more to say about makeup than posting in groups and forums really allowed, and then I guest posted on my friends’ blog, and was like wow, I really like doing that. So, that’s how Lena Talks Beauty was born! I’m so glad I decided to do it, it has been such a fun experience. I’ve developed new skills, made new friends with other bloggers, through #BrunchClub and online.
Making time to blog can be a challenge, but I try and tear myself from the laptop as well. I do a jazz dance class, spend time with friends and family and also read voraciously. It’s coming into summer here, so I’m looking forward to spending time at the beach, or sitting outside cafes in the sun. Or alternatively, sitting inside grumbling about how humid it is haha.
I hope this has helped you get to know the girl behind the blog a bit better, and that you found it at least mildly interesting!
