Lena Talks Beauty empties post - swisspers, simple, weleda, sebastian, olaplex, palmolive, pure fiji, mac cosmetics, collection cosmetics, paula's choice, innisfree, orly, hk girl

It’s time for another empties post! I didn’t use many products up during January so decided to make it a combined affair with February. Then everything seemed to run out all at once! I’ve been really trying to finish one product before opening another but we all know how hard that is. I have finished skin, hair, body, makeup, and nail items, so at least one from each of the main categories that I blog about. Some are even full size! Now, without further ado, let’s get stuck in. I’ll be linking in the titles to where I have reviewed the products previously.

Collection Contour Kit

Tuesday, June 21st 2016 Makeup

Confession time – until recently, I had never tried contouring. I was always too scared that it’d look muddy or unnatural, so I just decided to steer clear. That is, until Collection sent me their new contour kit and I decided to take the bull by the horns! In this post I’m going to give you a complete noob’s guide to contouring, and a review of the Collection contour kit.

Collection eyes uncovered eyeshadow palette - Lena Talks Beauty

Collection Cosmetics is having a massive launch of products this summer, and today I’m sharing with you the Eyes Uncovered Nude Bronze Palette. It’s in the vein of Urban Decay’s Naked palettes and other neutral palettes that have been so popular over the last few years, but at a more affordable price point. I was sent this by Collection, and my mum and I have reviewed it for you – read on to find out what we think.

Collection Naturally Matt Foundation

Wednesday, August 19th 2015 Makeup

Collection Cosmetics recently launched their Naturally Matt Foundation here in New Zealand, and sent some to me to review. I typically don’t wear matte foundations, but I decided to give this a try in the interests of being a good beauty blogger. I’m glad I did, as it’s a lovely foundation – not chalky or dry like other matte foundations that I’ve tried previously. I’m not entirely sure why it’s ‘matt’ as opposed to ‘matte’ – it makes me think it’s a boy which is kind of funny.

Collection Cosmetics pastel polishes

Monday, May 25th 2015 Nails

Collection Cosmetics recently sent me a massive box of products from their range, and I was overwhelmed with how many great items they included. The first thing I ever tried from Collection was a nail polish when they launched last year, and I really liked it. So, I was stoked to see that they had sent me 5 polishes that are new to their Work The Colour collection. These are mostly pastel shades, which I looove because I love pastel nails. It might be winter but my nails are light and cheery! In this post I’ll be reviewing them, and showing how they look on my nails.

FOTD with Maybelline Fit Me Foundation

Tuesday, April 28th 2015 Makeup

With the help of Maybelline’s chart, I recently discovered that Maybelline Fit Me Foundation is supposed to be my perfect match. I was sent it to try out and today I’ll be sharing my thoughts, as well as a look that I did the other weekend wearing it. I’ve called this a FOTD (Face Of The Day) but really it’s more like FOTOD (Face Of The Other Day). My skin is dry, and I like to wear a dewy foundation, so this sounded just right for me. I chose shade 120 – Classic Ivory based on my MAC shade being NW20, and luckily it was right! The ten shades available in New Zealand range from 115 Ivory to 310 Sun Beige.

MUA for a day – Collaboration with Caitlin

Tuesday, August 5th 2014 Makeup

Today is a bit of an unusual post because it’s not featuring my face – instead it’s my friend Caitlin! She has a fashion and beauty blog, and we decided to do each other’s makeup and post the results on our respective blogs. It was pretty fun, I never do anyone else’s makeup so it was a bit strange doing it and trying to be gentle, while still making them look fabulous. It was also cool looking through her makeup which was a bunch of things I’ve never used before, especially all the different Benefit products.

Here she is before any makeup – looking gorgeous as always.

The first product I put on her was MAC Prep and Prime Skin, which made for a nice smooth base. Then I used the Maybelline Fit Me foundation stick in the shade 120, and kind of drew some lines on her face then blended them with a foundation brush. I’ve never used a stick foundation before so I needed instructions “If you read my blog you’d know this!” she said. I do read her blog but I have to say I don’t memorise it. Sorry Caity. There were just a couple of blemishes that needed extra coverage so I used her Maybelline Mineral Power Natural Perfecting concealer on top of them.

Next came an exciting product which was Benefit High Beam highlighter which I applied on her cheekbones and blended with my finger, and it gave a really lovely glow to her skin. Then I set everything with Revlon Colorstay Aqua mineral makeup which apparently has coconut water in it – coconut everything seems to be so hot right now! I moved to brows next, using Benefit Gimmebrow which was in a mascara-type tube – another novelty product for me and I think it did a great job at lightly filling in her brows.

For her eyes I used a couple of colours from her eyeshadow quad which is from Kmart’s Face Eyes Lips Nails range, over my Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer potion because it’s too great to not use. It was more weird working on someone’s eyes than on their face, I thought. I used her Collection Cosmetics EXTREME eyeliner which is a felt tip which was really easy to use – I actually did a relatively smooth line for once which can be a bit of a rarity when I use the brush style on my own! I finished off her eye makeup with Benefit Bad Gal lash which was a good mascara, but it was so hard to put it on her! I swear I made so many smudges which was not an amazing look.

There were so many options for lipstick but I chose MAC Chatterbox which was an amplified shade that was just so pretty and looked good for her black outfit. Applying lipstick was a bit weird and smudgy too. I think we both decided we shouldn’t quit our day jobs to become makeup artists after this experiment but it was a good laugh!

Now, here’s the finished product:

She looked great in the before but even more babealicious in the after!

Now you can head on over to Caitlin’s blog –  My Flatmate’s Wardrobe to see what wonders she worked on me!

Review: Collection Cosmetics Nail Polish

Sunday, June 1st 2014 Nails

Recently Collection Cosmetics (re)launched in New Zealand, and as part of this they did a big giveaway on their Facebook page. I was lucky enough to win a nail polish – shade number 12 which called Purplicious. I have had this on my toes for the last few weeks but figured that once was probably enough when it comes to posting pictures of my toes on the blog, and took some pictures when I put it on my fingernails.

I really liked this polish, it was beautifully opaque in two coats, not at all streaky, and dried very quickly. I liked the chunky top of the bottle as it was easy to hold while painting, and the brush is just a very standard size/shape – not too big or too small. The longevity has been good so far, I’m 3 days in and no sign of a chip despite my propensity to do reckless things with my nails.

Here’s how it looks on my nails before I cleaned up around the cuticles, and added a top coat:

Two coats

This is the final result, which I’m very impressed with for such an affordable polish – they’re only $6.39! I would rather have 4 or 5 of these polishes than just one OPI polish.

Collection Cosmetics don’t test on animals which is good for those who are on the look out for cruelty free products. There are 24 shades of polish in the range and I think I’ll be buying a few more of these. Collection is exclusively sold at Countdown in New Zealand, you can find out if it’s available in your area on their website. I’ve heard good things about their concealer and mascara, and seeing as it’s so cheap I can imagine it’ll be easy to pop a few in my trolley.

Have you tried anything by Collection – what else should I try?
