Lena talks beauty empties post - hair, skin & cuticles

May, June, and July empties – bumper edition!

This post is long overdue – and I can tell this because my empties box is quite literally overflowing. With moving house and changing jobs, this poor wee blog has been sorely neglected but now I feel like I’ve got life under control so I’m back baby! Over the last 3 months I have finished 12 products, with most of those being full size so I’m pretty proud of myself. I’ve made a real point of sticking to a consistent skincare routine which means I’m behind in trying new products but my skin is loving it, and I’ve actually managed to finish a few things. This post features hair, skin, body, and nail care products, so let’s jump into it.

Pureology Perfect 4 Platinum shampoo and conditioner, L'oreal Elvive Extraordinary oil cream - Lena Talks Beauty

Pureology Perfect 4 Platinum Shampoo & Conditioner*

Purple shampoo is an essential if you colour your hair blonde, but some of them can be extremely drying. I was using one of the big names on the market, but it made my hair feel like straw. So I would neglect using it, and end up terribly brassy. Then I got sent the Pureology 4 Platinum range, including these 2 products. They are formulated to keep your colour from fading, and keep the brass at bay. I was definitely less brassy by the time I made it to my most recent hair appointment, which I was delighted by. Salon products are expensive and usually I give them a miss, but since I’ve invested so much in my colour, it’s worth spending a bit extra to look after it.

Repurchase? I’ll consider it, but have several backups to use up first.

L’Oreal Elvive Extraordinary Oil Oil-in-Cream*

I squeezed every drop out of this tube since I loved it so much. For the last 6 months, every time I washed my hair, I used this cream afterwards. It made my hair dry into beautiful waves if left to air dry, or kept it smooth if blow-drying. My love for it was even featured by L’Oreal on their Instagram which was a huge compliment. All for only $10!

Repurchase? I’m sure I will, but need to use up some other products first.

Atzen DNA Repair Serum*

Atzen is quite a new brand on the NZ market and I attended the launch last year. They talked a lot about combining the power of natural ingredients with science to create the range, which sounded great. I was extremely skeptical about a serum that could repair DNA, especially considering it cost an eye-watering $172 for 30ml. However, I decided to commit and use the entire thing before I judged it. Now I can say it is definitely a load of rubbish. I may not be a cosmetic chemist but I can hand on my heart say it did absolutely nothing for my skin. It includes hyaluronic acid extracted from Japanese mushrooms which sounds very exciting but you can get that from much cheaper sources. I don’t usually slam products I’ve been sent for review but this is just too outlandish to not talk about.

Repurchase? LOL no

Oasis Beauty Rhino Repair

I am practically evangelical about how much I love this. I got a sample of it years ago, and then ordered the full size. You only need such a small amount of product, so this has lasted me at least 2 years. I can get eczema sometimes which Rhino Repair is perfect for, as well as any patches of chafing or skin irritation that I get. I’ve even recommended it to my dad, and a lady at the hairdresser.

Repurchase? I was actually sent a tube as a PR sample, have already cracked into that.

Trilogy Ultra Hydrating Body Cream*

This is very nice and moisturising, but watch out for the shimmer – it can get everywhere. I mostly applied this to my legs if I was going out, not something I’d slather over my entire body before going to bed!

Repurchase? I don’t think so.

Trilogy Make-up Be Gone Cleansing Balm*

I felt like this balm was the loaves and the fishes that keep replenishing in the Bible story – it just lasted forever! A little goes a long way, and it does such a good job at removing my makeup. I like the way my skin felt clean but not stripped after using it.

Repurchase? Will consider, but currently have a backlog to use up.

Za Cosmetics Deep Hydration Lasting Moisture Gel

Speaking of hyaluronic acid, this gel is a great source of it! I first was introduced to Za via PR samples, but I’ve since become a dedicated customer with my own hard earned cash. This gel goes great under makeup or worn on bare skin. It makes my skin feel hydrated without any greasiness. My only critique is that you can’t scrape everything out of the jar.

Repurchase? Yes I’m sure I will

Lush Lemony Flutter Cuticle Butter

This is now the second tub of Lemony Flutter that I have used up, which is impressive considering how much is contained in them. I applied it every night before bed, and let all the goodness soak in. My nail technician says she can tell how well nourished my cuticles are, which I am very proud of.

Repurchase? I’m sure I will, but have some cuticle oils to use first.

Daiso BB Face Mask with Hyaluronic Acid

I enjoy a good sheet mask, so I got a couple of these at Daiso. It’s pretty similar to basically every other sheet mask on earth, and you can get 3 for about $10.

Repurchase? Probably!

Nail Juice cuticle balm

I got this wee cuticle balm in a combo of pampering products from Nail Juice, and loved the delicious sweet scent of it. One of my coworkers always would comment when I put it on.

Repurchase? If I was ordering polish as well.

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula

Love this stuff! I finished a full size bottle a little while ago and have been trying to get through some more sample sachets, so made use of this. It can be a little greasy but it’s worth it when you have super dry skin.

Repurchase? Undoubtedly

The 12 products I finished over this period brings my total to 44 for 2017. This would not even be an achievement for most people but as a beauty blogger who is lucky to be sent a lot of different products, it’s very tempting to use them all for a week or so and just never touch them again!

Have you used any of these products? What were your thoughts on them?

  • The Za gel is on super special at the Wellington Farmers at the moment – maybe it will be in Auckland as well?

    • I saw it today actually! Considered buying it but I just got sent a Neutrogena Hydro Boost which is similar and I also love, so restrained myself.

  • $172 for a serum? For that price, I’d want it to make me breakfast every morning too lol. It just goes to show that sometimes outrageously priced products are not worth the money at all. Thank heavens you were gifted it rather than paying for it! I’ve considered buying that Trilogy cleansing balm, but the price tag + the amount you get in it has put me off. That & I’m too in love with the Pixi cleansing balm I own.

    • Haha breakfast 😂😂😂. The trilogy balm lasted quite a long time. A friend of mine also raves about the Goodness balm which is their sister company, could be worth a try too.
