At-home waxing was something that usually filled my heart with fear due to a few mishaps when I was younger, however recently I was contacted by Marzena who asked if I would like to try any of their products to write about. Marzena is a well-known New Zealand company that was founded 27 years ago, before I was even born! They have a variety of products encompassing both waxing and depilatory creams. I decided it was time to get back on the horse, and chose the Marzena large wax strips for legs and body. It’s heading towards spring and my legs have been hiding all winter, so it was time for some defuzzing. In this post I have reviewed the Marzena waxing kit as well as shared some advice for waxing success.
The Marzena large wax strips kit contains 20 large wax strips, 4 finishing wipes, and instructions on how to use them. I read the instructions very carefully, because I really wanted it to work out well. You need to have at least 3mm of hair for waxing, so if you’ve recently been shaving give it a little while to grow out. Luckily, the last time I had shaved was a while ago so I was ready to roll. For optimal results, exfoliate your skin 24 to 48 hours beforehand. When you’re ready to wax, make sure your legs are clean and dry, with no lotion on them.
As I said earlier I had never successfully waxed myself before so I was a bit nervous to try this. However, since my previous catastrophes were with hot wax, my fears were lessened because these wax strips are used at room temperature. No microwave-related catastrophes for me, thank goodness.
The strips come in pairs of two, and to split them you rub them between your hands. You do that to slightly warm the wax, so you can pull them apart to use them.
Set aside one of the wax strips, carefully so you don’t end up gluing your phone to it. I would advise keeping pets away too because having a wax strip on the cat would not be ideal.
Now, the fun begins! You apply the strip downwards with the direction of hair growth and press down firmly. Then, before you lose your nerve, pull the strip back. I was surprised that it wasn’t as painful as I expected, and my friend Laura who joined me for this experience/served as my photographer agreed with me after she tried one. The strips can be used a few times before they lose their effectiveness. The finishing wipes remove the last traces of wax from your skin so you can go about your business with nice smooth legs. There’s no need to shower or anything afterwards
I managed to completely wax my lower legs but it was a bit tricky getting around the backs of my calves. Luckily I’m flexible, but if you aren’t you may need to rope in a friend/flatmate/partner. I found that waxing didn’t quite pick up all of the hairs, as some were shorter than others. This is because hair grows in three different phases so some may be too short to grasp with the wax. When I used to get waxed regularly, I found that over time my hair started to grow in the same cycle so I could get a perfectly smooth result. It will take 4-6 weeks for the hair to regrow, and it’s best to stick to a consistent schedule with waxing. Don’t fall into the temptation of a quick shave as it will disrupt your hair growth cycle.
If you’re waxing you really need to be exfoliating regularly. When I’m in the shower I grab my handy exfoliating gloves and give my legs a scrub down with body wash. If you struggle with ingrown hairs then have a read of my post about How to Prevent and Treat Ingrown Hairs. Always avoid tanning and steer clear of warm, moist environments like hot tubs and pools right after you wax, to minimize the chance of getting an infection.
To do my lower legs I used 10 strips, which means you can get two waxes out of the kit. A salon half leg wax in Auckland is at least $40, whereas buying a Marzena wax kit means it will cost about $10 per wax – such a great saving. Prices for the Marzena large wax strips kit vary depending on the retailer but ranges between $16.50 and $21. You can buy Marzena products directly from their website (NZ only – includes FREE shipping). In New Zealand they are stocked at New World, Pak N Save, and selected pharmacies. In Australia they are sold at Coles, Priceline, and selected pharmacies.
I hope this review of the Marzena large wax strips kit was informative, and gave you some confidence to go forth and do your own at-home waxes!
