MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour – review and swatches
Early in 2016, MAC Cosmetics released their take on matte liquid lipsticks with their Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour collection. I didn’t try them then, but now they’re back. This year’s Retro Matte collection is full of deep and muted tones, ready for the autum/winter season here in New Zealand. I was sent three of the shades from this range by MAC Cosmetics and in this post I will be showing you how they look as well as sharing my thoughts on them.
For those who prefer timeless glamour to all-out flash, matte reigns supreme. The M∙A∙C innovation on this classic texture is back with 12 new saturated shades of Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour in on-trend muted and deep tones. Each promise one thing: a big splash of colour in a liquid-suede finish that’s impossible to forget.
ARNIVOROUS blackened red
YOUNG ATTITUDE blackened teal
DASH O’ SPICE yellow beige
ESS-PRESSO deepened chocolate brown
SIMPLY SMOKED brown taupe
STONE greyed neutral brown
CAFÉ AU CHIC greyed beige
BURNT SPICE creamy dirty rose
SO ME greyed plum
TOPPED WITH BRANDY deep dirty rose
UNIFORMLY FABULOUS blackened grape
CHOCOTEASE warm chocolate brown
The shades that I was sent are Topped with Brandy, Simply Smoked, and Ess-presso. When I first opened them I was like wow I do not think these will suit me. I tried them out that evening as you may have seen on my Instagram story, and they started to grow on me.
Ess-presso and Simply Smoked look really similar to me in the swatch below but on my lips I really noticed the difference. Ess-presso is a much warmer chocolate brown.
Here’s what the applicator wands look like for the MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolours. I found the shape a little weird at first but it’s good at hugging my lipline to apply crisply. I also like that the wand isn’t too long, I feel like I have good control with it.
I haven’t yet gathered the nerve to wearing any of these shades out of the house, as I’m usually so much more of a red/pink/purple-on-a-brave-day type of girl but what would a beauty product review be without seeing it on my face! I think once we get into autumn and winter I can see myself wearing these on a night out but currently I’m still wearing summery clothes so it’d look a bit funny.
The MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour formula is one of the most comfortable wearing liquid lipsticks that I’ve tried. It applied smoothly, didn’t crack or get clumpy on my lips. There was some transferring onto cups when I drank, and it needed a touch up after a meal but I expect that with pretty much anything. The next big test is if it’s kiss-proof but I’ll have to report back on that – single girl problems.
The MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour collection came out on NZ counters in early March, so hopefully there are still some available now. I can see they are still in stock on the MAC Cosmetics US website.
I did intend to get this post up much earlier, I took the photos about 3 weeks ago, but my life has been an absolute whirlwind and it’s only now that it’s a public holiday that I’ve had the chance to sit down and write. RRP for these is $50.00 here in NZ.
