This month is the first anniversary of when I started doing empties posts! I went through a bit of a walk down memory lane, revisiting old posts and seeing what I thought of products from months gone by. During July I finished, or decided to throw away, a whopping ten products. The number of products coming in really outweighs those, but let’s not think about that! There are four makeup items, three skincare, one hair care, one nails, and one oral health product, so let’s get cracking with the reviews.
MAC Studio Sculpt
I have really loved this foundation for the last year or so, and I have squeezed every drop out of it. The coverage is great and leaves a lovely dewy finish. I have worn this in the vast majority of my blog photos since this blog’s inception, and it has always treated me well. It’s not cheap – around $70 here in New Zealand, but I feel like it’s worth it. I love the coverage it gives, and how it’s not cakey even when my skin is really dry.
Repurchase? Hopefully soon – once I’ve got some spare money!
NYC Long Wearing Extra Shiny top coat 271
I don’t have much to say beyond that this is terrible in every way. Gloopy, not quick drying, and not that shiny. I’m not sure why it took me so long to throw this out.
Repurchase? NO! I’d rather go without.
This was a one off creation that I made at an event Trilogy hosted for bloggers. It was a really great creamy moisturiser that used a mixture of the natural plant oils such as Rosehip that Trilogy are known for.
Repurchase? Unfortunately, that’s not possible as it was an artisan one off creation.
Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Lotion
I bought this last year since I knew BHAs (Beta Hydroxy Acids, in this case it’s Salicylic Acid) are great for acne-prone skin, and I had had some success with using Stridex BHA pads before. However, I didn’t have amazing results with this. I think partially because I was inconsistent with using it – it’s not very good under makeup so that restricted it to evening use, where it was competing for face time with a number of other products. I’ve now bought La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo+ which also is a BHA so I’ll see how I go with that before considering buying this again.
Repurchase? Yet to decide.
Neutrogena HydroBoost Water Gel
I recently wrote about this, and in summary it’s a wonderful daytime moisturiser. For the full post click here.
Maybelline The Colossal Mascara
Maybelline do such great mascaras, and have such an extensive range. I really like the bristles on this brush, they really thickened my lashes nicely without clumping. I used this for a long time but it kind of fell by the wayside when I got Benefit Roller Lash mascara which is superb. However, the Benefit mascara is twice the price, so for a more affordable mascara Maybelline The Colossal is a great option.
Repurchase? Probably in the future.
Maybelline Volum’Express The Falsies Big Eyes Mascara
I really loved this mascara and used it for the majority of last year, and I was sad when it dried out. The seperate brushes for top and bottom lashes is a great idea, and I’m still just as enamoured with the concept as I was when I originally won this and wrote about it last year.
Repurchase? Most likely
Napoleon Perdis Mascara
This was a freebie with a magazine quite a while ago, and I enjoyed using it. There wasn’t anything particularly amazing about it, but it served me well. My understanding is that it was just produced as a gift with purchase, so I’m not sure how it compares to the rest of the Napoleon Perdis mascaras.
Repurchase? Not possible
Clairol Visible Repair Intensive Mask
I’ve been making an effort to use up more of my samples, so I put all of my shampoo/conditioner/treatment samples in the shower, and this is one of them. It made my hair look and feel much nicer after I used it.
Repurchase? Maybe. I’m not sure how much it would cost.
White Glo Toothpaste
This isn’t quite the usual beauty content, but I love White Glo toothpaste! I drink a lot of tea and coffee and this does such a great job at keeping my teeth white. Once I stopped using it (to use a One Direction toothpaste) and I really noticed the difference. Whitening toothpaste doesn’t really whiten your teeth per se, you need one of those whitening kits (or a dentist) for that, but it keeps my teeth white.
Repurchase? Already have, although the Coffee and Tea drinkers variety.
Phew – I need a lie down after writing all of that! Have you tried any of the products that I used up during July? If so, I’d love to know what you think of them. Also, if you’ve written an empties post, leave the link in the comments section, they’re my favourite kind of post to read.
