Harry Potter nail art

Today I’m going to be showing you the most challenging nail art I’ve ever attempted. The Polish Addicts of New Zealand group/blog has run a nail art contest named ‘It’s a Kind of Magic’. You had to choose good magic, or dark magic, and doΒ nail art to go with that theme. When I think of magic, my first thought is Harry Potter, so I’ve entered under the good magic category.

I spent a long time trying to think of different designs, and had several failed attempts at some free hand nail art. So, I decided to bust out my new striping tape and do a design featuring the four Hogwarts houses. It was my first attempt at striping, and it wasn’t easy that’s for sure. My technique did improve as time went on, so I have some hope for future attempts. Here’s the final result:

Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Gryffindor Hogwarts manicure

Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Gryffindor, and then Harry’s scar. My brother suggested I do the Hogwarts Crest on my thumb nail but my skills are soooo not that advanced!

From left to right, the polishes used were:
Essie – 725 Pretty Edgy
OPI – Yoga-ta Get This Blue!
OPI – Need Sunglasses?
Jordana – 089 Black
OPI – Oy Another Polish Joke
Essie – 729 Limited Addiction
Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear – White On.

OPI, Essie, Jordana, Sally Hansen polishes

The silver stripes on the Slytherin and Racvenclaw nails are the striping tape that I used, and it’s from Kmart and cost about $3. I didn’t have the right polish for this so I just decided to use the tape and go over it with a top coat. It has not lasted very well but that’s okay. The freehand stripes on the Hufflepuff nails didn’t look amazing, but I just couldn’t figure out a better way to get black stripes on yellow. There are some incredibly talented people in the PANZ group, so I’m not feeling terribly confident that I’ll win, but I am really proud of my effort.

Entries close on Tuesday night, so fingers crossed for me! I’ll update this post with the results when they’re up. Have a look over at the PANZ blog, there is some awesome nail art on there –Β www.panz-blog.com
