Eleanor Dorn is an Auckland-based makeup artist who has recently launched her own line of cosmetics. About 18 months ago I heard her speak at an event, and at the time she had a range of brushes. Since then, she has gone on to release a range of makeup also. Eleanor kindly sent me these products for review, and I’ve been using them for the last wee while. They are the Highlighting Shimmer Powder, Brow Kit which includes Brow Duo Pencil, Brow Highlighter, Brow Set, Duo Sharpener, Pointed Face Brush, and the Kabuki Brush.
First up, an overview of the Eleanor Dorn makeup and makeup brushes. The packaging is lovely, all black and printed with her logo in gold. It looks very good quality, and feels it too. The compacts snap shut nicely, and even include mirrors in them. They say you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover but we all know that part of the joy of makeup is nice packaging.
Highlighting Shimmer Powder
If you were to buy one product from Eleanor Dorn Makeup, make it this incredible highlighting powder. Every single time I wear it I get compliments, both in person and on Instagram. It has a golden glow that is just delightful. I own a few other highlighters, like Benefit High Beam and NARS Albatross and this is the one I’ve been reaching for every time lately. I want to cover my entire face in it, but I decided since I’m a receptionist and normal person, not a YouTube beauty guru, I should probably limit it to the cheekbones.
Here’s how it looks on my face – just so beautiful!
The brow kit encompasses several items that are also available individually from Eleanor Dorn, and it encompasses both makeup and tools.
Brow Duo Pencil
This is an eyebrow pencil that also has a spoolie attached. It comes in four different shades – blonde, auburn, medium brown, and dark brown. The texture is waxy without feeling hard on your skin. Spoolie tools are perfect for blending out your eyebrow pencils to ensure that they look even.
The duo brow highlighter features a matte cream pencil on one end and a shimmer cream pencil on the other end. Brow highlighting is something I haven’t experimented with much, but I know it’s very popular especially amongst Instagram makeup artists. Whilst I do have a beauty-themed Instagram account @lenatalksbeauty I am not cool enough to keep up with all the trends usually. You may notice that I neglected to include it in the photos of this post – I forgot it was part of this collection – oops!!!
A good sharpener is always handy – this one has two different sized holes. One is for standard pencils, and the other is for jumbo sized ones. It has a lid that captures the shavings as well, so you can travel with it.
Brow Set is a clear eyebrow gel to sets in place your eyebrow pencil or powder. Once you have applied them, brush the brow set through and they will hold in place. You can use this on your bare brows as well, for a little bit more of a groomed look. In the photo below, I’ve used the brow set alone on one brow, and paired with the brow pencil on the other.
#19 Pointed Face Brush
The pointed face brush is perfect for applying highlighter. I’ve used it for applying the Eleanor Dorn highlighting shimmer powder, as well as my Australis Banana Powder that I apply under my eyes. It is made of natural fibres and is lovely and soft.
#21 Kabuki Brush
The Kabuki brush wasn’t actually a press sample, I won it in a giveaway from Eleanor’s Instagram which is how I ended up on her radar. I’ve included it in here anyway, because I wanted to review it. A couple of months ago I had to throw away my formerly-beloved XoBeauty Flat Top Face Brush (featured in my empties post here). Kabuki brushes are great for buffing in foundation and giving a natural finish to the skin. I’ve used this brush with my YSL Touch Eclat foundation, Maybelline Fit Me foundation, and Clinique Blemish Solutions liquid makeup.
