Product review: Revlon Matte Balms

Revlon Matte Balms have been all over the internet since they were released in the US last year, and then more recently here in New Zealand. They are along the lines of Clinique Chubby Sticks, which have been out for a couple of years, and other stick/pencil format lip products which have been so popular recently. Revlon describes them as “Velvety Matte Look. Moisture Rich Balm A Matte finish that’s beyond plush. Balm that’s beyond comforting. Our Triple Butter Complex of Shea, Coconut and Mango butters nourishes lips. In 10 collectible, craveable colors.” I had been wanting to get at least one for a while, but was on a no-buy last month that I’m continuing this month. Luckily I had a Farmers voucher, and so i bought two over the weekend. The shades are 220 Showy, which is a cool toned pink/coral, and 210 Unapologetic which is a cool toned brighter pink. I’ve swatched them on my arm here: I like the pencil/stick format, very easy to apply, although I wonder if it will be harder to ensure a crisp cupid’s bow once they’ve worn down a bit. The tubes are matte too, which is a nice touch. They smell strongly […]

How to avoid makeup flashback

Ah flashback, something which strikes fear into the hearts of makeup wearers everywhere. Even celebrities, with their teams of makeup artists, aren’t immune to it – look at the beautiful Miley Cyrus, her makep is perfect except for that white patch. In this post I’ll be writing about what flashback is, and which ingredients to look out for that commonly cause it. The often-suggested advice to avoid this is to not wear anything with an SPF – while this can be a helpful rule, SPF is a measurement, and not an ingredient. It’s the Sun Protection Factor of a product – it measures how long a sunscreen remains effective on your skin. If you would get burned in 10 minutes without sunscreen, an SPF of 15 will protect you for 150 minutes (Cho, 2011).’m getting into a whole other topic here, but the main point is – avoiding all products with sunscreen in them isn’t necessary to avoid flashback. Sunscreen is important, and it is possible to wear products with an SPF without getting flashback. The ingredients in sunscreen that are known for causing a flashback are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These are known as physical sunscreens, because they work […]

Kmart brand lipstick – say whaaaaat?

You heard me – Kmart has its own brand of lip products! If you’ve been to Kmart in NZ or Australia since they did their cosmetics refurbish earlier this year you will have seen a section call ‘Face Eyes Lips Nails’ – not to be confused with the brand ELF (Eyes Lips Face). I’d walked past it before, but never bought anything as I figured it would be poor quality. However, this past weekend I was at my local Kmart with Elese, and an orange lipstick caught my eye, and as it only cost $6 I thought why not give it a whirl. Here’s my FOTD (Face Of The Day) for afternoon tea with a friend on the weekend. I’m wearing MAC Pro Longwear concealer, Maybelline Dream Pure BB cream, Models Prefer mineral foundation, Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, Silk Naturals loose eyeshadow which I’m planning on posting about soon, Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner in Espresso Ink, Smashbox Mascara and Bobbi Brown eyeshadow in my brows. Phew that sounds like a lot of products but it’s just for a fairly casual outing! And a close up of my lips, to show the lipstick better. My lips are a bit dry here, from […]

Lip Product Addict Tag

My friend Jordy tagged me to do this Lip Product Addict tag in her latest youtube video. She also blogs and you should definitely check her site out – A Little Pinch Of Wonder. After you’ve finished reading this post of course! This tag is for lip product addicts, and I certainly am one, as you can see by this picture. I probably have more tucked away in drawers and in handbags too, but this is the bulk of my collection. 1. Favorite balm/treatment? Burt’s Bees Nourishing Lip Balm with Mango Butter.  This is the lip balm that gets the honour of living in my handbag, as you might be able to tell from the fact that the label is completely rubbed off.         2. Best eye-catching red? Revlon Super Lustrous Creme Fifth Avenue Red. I got it through a reddit exchange as mentioned in this post, and I am so delighted with it. It’s just a really classic red, which makes sense as it’s from the 1950s. 3. Best luxury & best drugstore? The closest I have to a luxury brand is NARS Velvet Gloss lip pencil – the shade is New Lover. They sell for […]

Beauty Review Vault haul

Beauty Review is a great New Zealand-based website that sends out full sized beauty products for people to review on their website. You can also review products not sent to you by them, chat on the forum or read the interesting articles that they put up. Four times a year they have a ‘vault’ sale which is where you use the points you earn by reviewing and participating on the site to buy products. They held one a few weeks ago and today I’m going to review the products that I received. Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Colour Lip Gloss Set – RRP $59 I chose this with the intention of giving it to my mum for a belated Mother’s Day gift – a bit of a cheapskate, I know, but my mum loves a bargain just like I do. And yes, she knows I was going to swatch them for the blog. She’s so long suffering. Anyway, on to the review – to be honest I was a bit disappointed with it – the glosses are quite small and weren’t anything special compared to just about every other lip gloss I’ve tried before. They work out to be $3.70/ml, whereas an Australis […]

Quick, easy make up for work

I’m going to be honest with you, dear readers. Despite being quite vain, I’m also incredibly lazy. This causes a bit of a conundrum for me on weekdays – I have to leave the house by 7:30am, and I also love to sleep in and eat breakfast while staring blearily at my twitter feed. A lot of the time I do just go to work barefaced, but sometimes I like to make the effort to get made up. In this post I’m going to demonstrate two of my go-to lazy girl’s work make up looks, for days where I want to wear make up but have minimal time. I apologise in advance for the photos, the lighting situation is not ideal at that time of day! Both of them start with me doing my usual base routine as seen here. Sometimes I use a BB cream instead but currently I’m too dark for my garnier one and too light for my Maybelline one, so foundation it is! I also always fill in my brows, using one of the techniques I outlined in my previous post on eyebrows. Look number one is almost no-make up make up, with the exception of the […]

My base routine

To me, one of the most important parts of a make up look is the base. It doesn’t matter how fabulous your eyeshadow looks if your foundation doesn’t match your skin, or you have way too much powder on. It’s taken me a while to find products that work for me, and now I’m really happy with my usual base routine. If my skin is dry, I’ll apply moisturiser, and then usually brush my teeth or something while it absorbs. The next step is applying primer, at the moment I’m using NYX anti-redness primer – you can see how it compares to other primers here. After that comes concealer, and I want to take a moment to rave about how great MAC Pro-longwear concealer is. I only need to use a tiny amount, and it covers all my pimples really well. I’ve tried a fair few other concealers and most of them did a rubbish job compared to this. I put a bit on my finger and pat it on any blemishes, and then blend it in with my Ecotools Airbrush concealer brush. Once my concealer is on, foundation is the next step. I am really in love with MAC Studio […]

New make up! Naked 3 and more.

For the last couple of years I’ve been a member on Reddit’s MakeupAddiction subreddit. It’s where I’ve learned a lot of what I know about make up, and there have been countless products that I have lusted over after seeing on there. One of these is Urban Decay’s Naked 3, which isn’t available in New Zealand stores. Recently I was talking a fellow member on there, and she was saying how she wanted some Australis Velourlips lipsticks, which aren’t sold in the US – and so, we decided to buy the products that we each coveted, and send them to each other. Today I received my parcel from her, and it’s better than I could have ever expected! Not only did it include the incredibly beautiful palette, but she had also bought me 5 lipsticks and some easter treats. I squealed when I opened the box, and excitedly took some photos. She sent me Urban Decay’s Naked 3 palette, which came with samples of all of their eyeshadow primers which was amazing because I love the original one. Also, there was a lipstick duo – Bite Beauty vivid luminous creme lipstick duo, with the colours Violet and Palomino (a bright pink). Then […]

What’s my face worth?

Recently a blogger I follow did a post about what her daily face of make up is worth, and I’ve decided to do the same. For reference, her post is at Elese, Aesthete here. This is for the look that I wore on Monday, just for a fairly casual trip to the mall and catching up with a friend, but it’s fairly similar to what I would wear to the office. I took a picture of my make up when I was wearing MAC Syrup, but then changed the lipstick to Revlon Raspberry Pie to take a photo for my last post about my favourite lipsticks. Here I am with both looks: Now let’s add it all up. I’m going to link to either where I bought it from, or somewhere similarly priced if I can’t find it. Sukin sensitive facial moisturiser $14.99 NYX Studio Perfect anti-redness primer $22 MAC Pro long wear concealer NW25 $19 USD or $22 NZD if bought from maccosmetics.com, $40 in NZ stores. Ecotools Airbrush concealer brush* 3.99 USD or $4.69 NZD MAC Studio Sculpt foundation NW20 31USD, $36 NZD if bought from maccosmetics.com. Around $70 in NZ stores. XoBeauty flat top synthetic face brush $26 Maybelline Dream LumiTouch highlighting concealer – can’t […]

My favourite lipsticks

Among my friends, I’m known as a bit of a lipstick addict. At last count, I have 30 lipsticks, and about half as many glosses. That might not be as many as some other bloggers, but I’ve never been a make up artist or worked anywhere beauty related, and only really got into make up in the last 2 or so years! Most beauty lovers seem to hoard either lip or eye products, and I tend to fall on the lip side of the fence. I managed to select a few which are my favourite, and my most commonly worn to share with you all today. It was almost like choosing favourite children but I’m sure they all understand! This is going to be a bit of a long post, so get a cup of tea and settle in. By far my most commonly worn lipstick is Revlon Lip Butter 085 – Sugar Plum. It looks like my lips, but better. It lives in my handbag, so I can quickly put some on if I need to feel a bit more put together. It’s soft and buttery to wear, although this does mean it needs fairly frequent re-application, but that’s okay […]
